The huts of Bletchley Park

When the codebreakers arrived in 1939, work began in the Mansion — but the lawns were soon covered with plain wooden huts, each with its own secret job. Select a building on the map to learn what happened inside.

Hut 6

Army & Air Force Enigma — decryption

  • Hut 6 broke the German Army and Air Force Enigma cyphers.
  • Codebreakers here used cribs — guessed plaintext — and Bombe 'menus' to find the day's rotor settings.
  • Once a key was found, the day's intercepts could be decrypted on modified Typex machines.

How it all fitted together

Intercepted radio messages flowed in from the Y stations. The decryption huts (6 and 8) found the Enigma keys with help from the Bombe crews of Hut 11; the intelligence huts (3 and 4) turned the decrypts into reports for commanders — all without the enemy ever learning that their 'unbreakable' cypher had been broken.
